Surging Nashville SC will look for their third consecutive victory when the expansion club plays host to the New England Revolution on Friday night at Nissan Stadium.
The Revolution enter feeling unlucky not to be on a three-game unbeaten run of their own.
Nashville (6-6-6, 24 points) has exploded for six goals over consecutive victories following a six-game stretch in which they scored only three times.
They have done it mostly without recently-signed designated player Jhonder Cadiz, a Venezuelan striker who has made his first two MLS appearances off the bench in those victories, playing a combined 48 minutes.
In last week's 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo, it was Hany Mukhtar who scored twice in the opening 23 minutes before leaving the match at halftime with an undisclosed injury.
In a 3-0 victory Tuesday over FC Dallas, without Mukhtar, Randall Leal had a goal and an assist, and Cadiz struck for his first career MLS goal late off the bench.
Friday could provide manager Gary Smith's the first opportunity to give Cadiz, a former Benfica (Portugal) and Dijon (France) attacker, an extended look.
"It's fairly straightforward to say Jhonder's truly a focal point up front," Smith said. "He's a physical presence. He has the ability to run beyond. He's got a turn of pace and a trick and he's very, very positive in play."
New England (7-5-7, 28 points) will aim to get back to winning ways after a frustrating 2-1 home loss to the Philadelphia Union on Monday night. They will do so without Ecuadorian winger Cristian Penilla, who underwent season-ending foot surgery this week after sustaining an injury on Oct. 11.
The Revolution have also been without injured playmaker Carles Gil for most of the season. Even so, they dominated possession and chances against a Union side that sits second in the Eastern Conference and overall standings, only to be done in by some wasteful finishing and exceptional play from Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake.
"They put us under pressure for the first 10 or 15 minutes and then we got ourselves in the game," Revs coach Bruce Arena said afterward. "I thought (in) the second half we played well. On the whole, we should walk off the field with more than one goal tonight."
