The Chicago Fire are clinging to the 10th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference while the New York Red Bulls are seventh.
Improving postseason positioning is on the agenda for both teams Saturday night at Chicago's Soldier Field.
Chicago (5-8-5, 20 points) leads the Atlanta United by one point and Inter Miami CF by two points with five games remaining. The Fire also trail the ninth-place Montreal Impact by three points.
Chicago is 3-1-2 in its last six games since a 4-1 loss at Orlando City FC on Sept. 19, and coming off a 2-2 draw last Saturday at Kansas City.
Robert Beric and Djordje Mihailovic scored goals in stoppage time of each half to help Chicago rally from a pair of one-goal deficits and go above the playoff line after its game in Minnesota was postponed on Oct. 14 due to a suspected case of COVID-19.
"To win every game is our goal," Fire defender Jonathan Bornstein said. "And obviously, you know, that point will be a positive point going forward. We got to make up a game too with another game in hand. If we get some more points we push ourselves into the playoff picture, so these next games coming up are must wins."
The Red Bulls (7-8-4, 25 points) are one spot in the standings and one point ahead of Nashville SC. The Red Bulls are one behind New York City Football Club and gained points in their last two games thanks to a pair of late goals.
On Oct. 14, Caden Clark got the equalizer in the 77th minute against FC Toronto and Sunday Brian White scored five minutes into stoppage time to help the Red Bulls get a 1-1 draw against Orlando City. The Red Bulls are 1-0-2 in their last three games.
"We've got a good thing going, in terms of competitive will amongst the group, which is propelling us to perform at a higher level, at an excellence that we expect of the guys," New York interim head coach Bradley Carnell said.
