Greg Vanney, the head coach and technical director of Toronto FC, resigned, the club said Tuesday.
He had guided Toronto since 2014 and led the franchise to the Supporters' Shield, the MLS Cup title and Canadian Championship in 2017. He is the club's all-time leader in wins (112) and matches managed (250).
A search for a new coach will begin immediately.
Vanney, 46, was an MLS defender for 11 seasons before turning to coaching. He led Toronto to two additional MLS Cup finals and two more Canadian Championship wins.
"I wish Greg nothing but the best in the future," club president Bill Manning said. "Back in 2014 he took over the head coach duties for a team that had never made the playoffs and turned them into an MLS champion. More than that, he is of high character and a great family man. I thank him for time well served for our club, his legacy here in Toronto is secure."
Toronto had the second-most points in the league in 2020 with 44, finishing 13-5-5 and just behind the Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference. They were stunned in the first round of the playoffs by No. 7 seed Nashville SC, and expansion side.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Vanney thanked the owners, players and Toronto community.
"I recognize that I have been extremely fortunate to work for one of the best ownership groups in all of sports," he said. "... Thank you to all of the TFC staff and players for the incredible experiences we've shared together during this journey. I'm forever grateful to each of you. Lastly, to the TFC Fans. You're truly amazing and the memories and emotions from our biggest nights together will be cherished."
Toronto also reached the Concacaf Champions League final in 2018 but lost in penalties.
