DHAKA, Bangladesh A preliminary investigation into the tragic crane accident that killed five people in Uttara on Monday has found the Chinese contractor, crane operator, and Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Company security staff to be responsible for the incident due to several protocol violations.
The government-formed investigation committee discovered four major causes of the accident, including negligence on the part of the Chinese company, which was performing the work without the consultant's approval and without ensuring proper safety measures.
"Per the work plan, Monday was not a workday but a public holiday. The contractor attempted to complete the task with the crane without permission from the consultant." The report said.
It added that the final probe report should take action against all responsible for the accident.
To save money, the Chinese contractor did not even hire any subcontractors.
According to preliminary observations by fire officials, the crane appeared unfit, and its operator was also inexperienced.
Authorities have halted the construction of the Dhaka BRT until safety compliance is ensured.
